Forum of Young Global Leaders
Das Forum of Young Global Leaders wurde vom WEF-Vorsitzenden Klaus Schwab gegründet und bildet ausgewählte Führungskräfte für die Zukunft aus. Merkel gehörte 1992 zur ersten Runde des damals noch Global Leaders for Tomorrow genannten Eliten-Ausbildungs- und -Vernetzungsprogramms. Die Auserwählten, die zum Zeitpunkt der Nominierung nicht älter als 38 sein dürfen, absolvieren ein fünfjähriges Führungs-Ausbildungsprogramm. Es wird finanziert von einer ebenfalls von Klaus Schwab großzügig finanzierten Stiftung für den globalen Führungsnachwuchs und von Spenden der Großkonzerne. Das Jahresbudget der Stiftung für die Young Global Leaders betrug im Finanzjahr 2018/19 stolze 4,5 Mio. Franken. Zu den über 1300 Mitgliedern und Absolventen des Programms zählen viele Vorstandschefs von Unternehmen, Regierungschefs, Minister und Leitende wichtiger gemeinnütziger Organisationen. Seit 2012 fängt das Forum beim Auskundschaften und Aufbauen der Mitglieder der künftigen Weltelite noch früher an, bei denen, die hohes Potential schon in ihren Zwanzigern zeigen. Sie werden zu Global Shapers ernannt. Das Forum unterhält ein riesiges Netzwerk von rund 10.000 dieser Global Shapers, in 428 Städten (Hubs) und 148 Ländern. Wenn sie sich dabei als hinreichend ehrgeizig und lenkbar erweisen, werden ihre Karrieren gefördert.
